EDUCATION WILL START GRADUALLY IN 4 PROVINCES MOST AFFECTED BY THE EARTHQUAKE

Minister of National Education Mahmut Özer attended the evaluation meeting held in Hatay regarding the preparatory work carried out as part of the education and training processes planned to start on March 27. Özer announced that education will start gradually as from March 27 in some districts in Kahramanmaraş, Adıyaman, Malatya and Hatay, which were most affected by the earthquake.

Deputy Governor of Hatay, Oğuzhan Bingöl, Governor of Kütahya and Coordinator Governor of Hatay Ali Çelik, Deputies of  Hatay Hüseyin Yayman and Sabahat Özgürsoy Çelik, Deputy Ministers Petek Aşkar and Sadri Şensoy, Director General for Basic Education Tuncay Morkoç, Director General for Secondary Education Halil İbrahim Topçu, Chairman of the MEB Board of Education and Training Cihad Demirli, Director General for Private Education Institutions Mustafa Gelen, Provincial Director of National Education Mustafa Öztürk and district national education directors attended the meeting held at the Hatay Disaster Coordination Center under the chairmanship of the Minister of National Education Mahmut Özer.
 
Emphasizing that they have mobilized all opportunities for children in the disaster area to continue their education, Minister Özer reminded that after the earthquake, education was suspended in 81 provinces until February 23 and they started education in 71 provinces, including Elazığ, on February 20. Stating that they reunited approximately 15 million 242 thousand students with education, Özer reminded that they divided 10 provinces in the earthquake region into three categories, taking into account their current damage situations.
 
Stating that they started education in Kilis, Diyarbakır and Şanlıurfa, which are in the first category, as of March 1, and brought together 1 million 236 thousand 929 students and teachers with education and training. Özer said that approximately 1 million 258 thousand 719 students started education in Gaziantep, Osmaniye and Adana, which are the provinces in the second category, as of March 13. Özer noted that a total of 17 million 737 thousand 648 students continue their education in six provinces from the first and the second categories.
 
Expressing that approximately 252 thousand students who were transferred from the provinces in the earthquake zone to other provinces started education together with their peers, Minister Özer pointed out that Kahramanmaraş, Adıyaman, Malatya and Hatay are in the third category as the most affected provinces by the earthquake. Announcing that they decided to start education gradually in these four provinces as a result of intensive consultations with the Ministry of Environment and Urbanization and Climate Change, the Ministry of Interior, governors, district governors, deputies, provincial and district national education directors, Özer underlined that education will begin gradually and peacefully only in districts and schools which is safe and structurally sound.
 
Minister Özer announced that they will start education,in Arapgir, Arguvan, Kale, Pütürge, Doğanyol, Yazıhan, Darende and Hekimhan districts in Malatya; Kahta, Gerger, Sincik, Samsat and Çelikhan districts in Adıyaman; Andırın and Ekinözü districts in Kahramanmaraş as of March 27.
 
As a result of extensive evaluation they made, Özer said that they will start education as of March 27 in Yayladağı, Altınözü, Erzin, Reyhanlı, Payas, Dörtyol and Arsuz districts in Hatay.
 
Education will be given in schools that has a building soundness certificate
Underlining that in the provinces in the earthquake zone, education will be carried out in schools that have been given a building soundness certificate by the Ministry of Environment, Urbanization and Climate Change, Minister Özer stated that the process can be managed with double shift and transported education depending on the number of schools that has a building soundness certificate.
 
Stating that the starting process of education in unmentioned districts in Kahramanmaraş, Adıyaman, Malatya and Hatay is left to the relevant governorships, Özer said that after the evaluations made in AFAD centers, the governorships will share the names of the districts that are ready for education after March 27 with the public by taking the necessary precautions regarding the accommodation and all the needs of the teachers and students.
 
Emphasizing that as of now, students continue their education in 1 thousand 793 tents, containers and prefabricated schools, Özer said that instead of a curriculum-based education, they are attentive to reunite children with their teachers in tents, containers and prefabricated schools in order to get over this trauma and to support their psychological resilience.
 
YKS and LGS support points will be increased from 734 to 1.000
Stating that the 8th and 12th grade students preparing for YKS and LGS will not be responsible for the second semester subjects for both exams, Özer stated that they opened support and training courses at 734 points in the disaster area to support students preparing for the exam. Expressing that they continue to provide all kinds of support for the preparation of children for LGS and YKS exams, Özer announced that they will not make any children suffer and will increase the number of support points from 734 to 1,000 by the end of this week. Özer said that guidance teachers and psychological counselors will continue to take an active part in this process, not only for student's academic skills, but also for their psychological resilience, until the exam.
 
Noting that their investment programs were also revised due to the major disaster in the region, Özer stated that they have allocated approximately 40 billion TL investment for the region. Özer underlined that in addition to the existing investments they will finalize the additional investments that need to be revised due to the earthquake have been carried out in coordination with the Ministry of National Education Construction Real Estate General Directorate, governorships and provincial national education directorates in one or two weeks.
 
Reminding that they have decided to build 500 new steel-constructed prefabricated schools Özer stated that these schools will be put into service gradually starting from April.
